Outdoor Play and Learning at Kilham C of E Primary School
At Kilham C of E Primary School, the children have recently been trialling some exciting new ideas for playtimes and dinner times as part of our involvement in the OPAL Outdoor Play and Learning programme.
OPAL is a nationally recognised school improvement programme that focuses on transforming play opportunities for children, helping to create happier, more active and more creative playtimes. Through this work, we are contin-uing to develop our provision to ensure every child has access to high-quality, inclusive play experiences every day.
This week, the children have had a fantastic opportunity to really embrace their creativity during dinner times. With music playing and a range of fun costumes available, the playground has been full of imagination, energy and joy. Children have loved expressing themselves through dance, role play and performance, all while enjoying cur-rent pop music with their friends. As part of developing our play provision, we discovered a collection of costume boxes from previous school plays and productions that had not been used for many years.
As a staff team, we carefully sorted through these re-sources and made them available for the children to use. It has been wonderful to see these forgotten items brought back to life, inspiring new games, stories and friendships. This initiative is just one example of how we are using play as a driver for school improvement.
By enriching play-times, we are supporting children’s social development, creativity, wellbeing and engagement in school life. We are excited to continue our OPAL journey and look forward to sharing more of these developments with you.
