Ash Wednesday Service 2026

On Wednesday 11th February, our school community gathered at All Saints Church, Kilham, to mark the beginning of Lent with a special Ash Wednesday Service. It was a truly meaningful occasion, with the whole school coming together to worship, reflect and pray at the start of this important season in the Christian calendar.

The service was led by Rev Steve, who warmly welcomed everyone into church. He opened with prayers that helped us to pause and reflect on the significance of Ash Wednesday — a day that reminds Christians of the importance of repentance, renewal and preparation for Easter.

We were incredibly proud of Z Lowe, who read confidently from the Bible: Matthew 4:1–13. This powerful passage tells the story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights. The reading helped us to understand why Lent lasts for forty days and how this time mirrors Jesus’ period of reflection, challenge and spiritual strength.

Rev Steve spoke to the congregation about the meaning of Lent, exploring the traditions associated with it and explaining why many people choose to give something up. He reminded us that Lent is not simply about giving up chocolate or treats, but about creating space for God, developing self-discipline and thinking carefully about our actions and attitudes. He encouraged everyone to consider how they might use this season to grow — perhaps by giving something up, taking up a positive habit, or making a conscious effort to show kindness and forgiveness.

A particularly thoughtful moment in the service came when the children shared the poem “Abstinence”. The poem reflected on giving up grumbling, worrying, criticising and unkind words, and instead choosing gratitude, trust, encouragement and positive relationships. The final humorous line raised smiles, but the message was clear: Lent can be about transforming our hearts and habits, not just avoiding sweet treats.

One of the most special parts of the service was the signing of the cross in ashes. Over 47 children and staff  came forward to receive the sign of the cross marked in ash on their foreheads. This traditional act is a visible reminder of humility, reflection and the beginning of the Lenten journey. It was a powerful and moving moment, and it was wonderful to see so many members of our school and church community taking part together.

The children represented the school beautifully, showing respect, reverence and maturity throughout the service. The strong partnership between our school and All Saints Church was clearly evident, and we are very grateful to Rev Steve for leading such a thoughtful and engaging service.

As we journey through Lent, we encourage our families to continue reflecting on how this season can be used as a time for growth — in faith, in gratitude and in kindness — as we look ahead to the hope and joy of Easter.
