Statement of British Values

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

At Kilham Church of England Primary School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We take opportunities to actively promote British Values, defined by the government as the following:

Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We aim to ensure that these fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. Our approach to this is that all curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our 4 year whole school worship plan, RE (Religion and Worldview), PSHE and Citizenship lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding. Our aim is that our children embrace these concepts with enthusiasm and demonstrate a good understanding of their application to their own lives.

The school makes considerable efforts to ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community during which these concepts are shown, through for example, sporting events, a range of visits and use of outdoor education centres. Their strong rooted values-based understanding gives them an excellent platform for embracing difference.

The following are a selection of activities and external accreditations that are evidence of our commitment to British values.

Many year groups take part in regular 'RE-Action' days which cover essential social, moral and cultural content and specifically focus on different faiths and beliefs
Year 6 actively lead Remembrance Day at the All Saints Church - Kilham - every November.
We have an elected school council which meets regularly with the headteacher and teaching staff
We have a dedicated eco committe who raise awareness of national and global environmental issues
A broad and balanced curriculum that teaches elements of democracy, civic responsibility, rules and laws, the monarchy, equality, values and virtues, environmental awareness and understanding of other faiths.
