UK STEM ACTIVITY DAY
Supergrid activity:
Children in Class 4 at Kilham School took part in the exciting Supergrid Activity run by UKSTEM. This STEM and business game allowed learners to step into the role of a Design Engineer, where they were tasked with creating their very own wind turbine to generate the most cost-effective electricity for their wind energy business and country.
Throughout the activity, the children learned how crucial factors such as design, shape, angles, and positioning are in effectively harnessing wind energy. The challenge was to create a wind turbine that maximized energy production while keeping costs low. The students worked in teams to compete against other countries, seeing which team could produce the most energy and electricity with their design.
In addition to the hands-on learning experience, the session also introduced the children to careers, skills, and pathways relevant to the wind and renewable energy industry. They gained valuable insights into the various roles in this growing sector, including engineers, technicians, and project managers, and explored the exciting opportunities available in the world of sustainable energy.
It was a fantastic day of teamwork, creativity, and learning, and the students had a brilliant time discovering how they can be a part of the future of renewable energy!
Dogger Bank Wind Farm:
The Dogger Bank Wind Farm is one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, located off the northeast coast of England in the North Sea. It is a landmark project in the transition to renewable energy, capable of generating up to 3.6 gigawatts of power, enough to supply millions of homes with clean, sustainable electricity. The wind farm is being developed in phases, with the aim to help the UK meet its carbon reduction goals and play a significant role in the global shift towards renewable energy. With cutting-edge technology, innovative engineering, and a focus on sustainability, the Dogger Bank Wind Farm is an important step in harnessing the power of wind to combat climate change and provide a greener future for all
