Forest Schools 2026

We are excited to share more information about the Forest School sessions that have been taking place at Kilham C of E Primary School. These sessions run on afternoons and offer children a rich, hands-on outdoor learning experience that complements their classroom learning.

During Forest School, the children take part in a wide range of practical, nature-based activities designed to build confidence, independence and teamwork. Recent sessions have included den building, where children work collaboratively to design and construct shelters using den building materials, encouraging problem-solving, communication and cooperation. The children have also enjoyed nature crafts, such as making photo frames from twigs, leaves and natural treasures found in the outdoor area, allowing them to be creative and develop fine motor skills.

The sessions also introduce children to carefully supervised fire activities, where they learn about safety, responsibility and respect for nature. Under adult guidance children learn how fires are safely lit, and observe or assist with simple activities around the fire. In addition, children have taken part in whittling sticks to cook marshmallow, learning how to use tools responsibly while developing focus, patience and hand-eye coordination.

Forest School places a strong emphasis on working together. Whether building dens, solving problems outdoors or supporting one another during activities, children learn to collaborate, take turns, and celebrate shared achievements. These experiences help build strong peer relationships and a sense of belonging.

Forest School is also extremely beneficial for children’s mental health and wellbeing. Spending time outdoors in a natural environment has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, boost mood, and improve concentration. The freedom to explore, take managed risks and learn at their own pace helps children build self-esteem, resilience and emotional regulation. For many children, Forest School provides a calm, nurturing space where they feel happy, confident and motivated.

As these sessions take place outdoors in all weathers, there is every chance children will get muddy or wet, particularly if the weather is against us. To ensure they are comfortable, please continue send your child to school with named outdoor clothing in a named bag that they can change into for the afternoon. Suitable clothing includes waterproofs, wellington boots, warm layers and spare clothes.

We are delighted with the enthusiasm and engagement shown by the children during Forest School and look forward to continuing to support their learning, wellbeing and connection with nature.
