Physical Education

Intent:

We believe that physical education is an essential part of a child’s educational development. We aim to develop a broad, rich and engaging curriculum offering a variety of activities to enhance skills in physical education. We also strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school at local events. Positive and inclusive participation in physical education will enable children to build, self-esteem, teamwork, and positive values and attitudes in P.E. and across the curriculum.

We aim to:

Develop confidence, skills and knowledge.

Develop physical literacy.

Provide new quality sporting opportunities.

Be proud of your achievements.

Promote fair play and respect.

Encourage children to live healthy, active lifestyles.

Engage in competitive sports and activities.

Implementation:

At Kilham Primary we use the scheme PE planning from Reception to Year 6. The framework covers areas such as athletics, dance, gymnastics, invasion games, net and wall games, outdoor adventurous games, striking and fielding games, target games and life skills. Each area is delivered through taught knowledge – Declarative knowledge (Knowing what) and Procedural knowledge (knowing how). Additionally, children are able to participate in sports such as Tag Rugby and Cricket delivered by external and local sports professionals. An information board is used for the children to access fixtures, fixture results and achievements.

Impact:

All children are provided with at least 2 hours of fun, engaging and active PE lessons every week from both class teachers and external specialist coaches. The PE funding has enabled us to purchase outdoor equipment meaning that children are active for a further 30 minutes per day through play times and lunchtimes. Our continuing success through the School Games Mark reflects the impact of the new curriculum, increased participation in cluster tournaments and enthusiasm for sport in and out of school.

Kilham School use PE Planning resources to help us deliver a coherent progressive curriculum. As part of the process for developing our curriculum we have though about

·        what to teach pupils, so that they achieve the aims of the national curriculum

·        how to structure the curriculum

·        which sports and physical activities should be included

Our PE Planning activities may be fun, but we are serious about the National Curriculum. Our highly qualified team ensure our resources are current and appropriate for our school pupils.

In our PE Planning scheme all our lessons have the option of fully detailed plans for less confident teachers, or quick reference plans for the experienced teacher. Every Unit of Work is accompanied with Medium Term Planning and Assessment to help roadmap our way through the PE Curriculum.
