Modern Foreign Languages - Spanish

At KilhamCE (VC) Primary School we believe that Modern Foreign Languages teaching should stimulate children’s interest in

other cultures and deepen their understanding of the world.  The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and

thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to speakers, both in speech and in writing.  

 

We believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils.  It

helps them to develop communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extends their knowledge of how

language works.  Learning a new language gives children a new perspective of the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

Intent

In line with the national curriculum 2014, the curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

·         understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

·         speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through

discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

·         can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

          discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation

Spanish is the modern foreign language that we teach in our school. The curriculum that we follow is based on the Key Stage 2 Framework for MFL

and the National Curriculum 2014. We use ‘Ilanguages’ Mixed age scheme of work to support planning and teaching.

. The Spanish language is regularly displayed in school and photographs are added to the school’s MFL portfolio.

The children’s’ Spanish work is evidenced in Spanish books

A progression of skills has been mapped for Year 3/4 and 5/6 and is used to ensure that children have opportunities to improve their work

and progress further. Whole school Spanish theme events take place annually. MFL work is commended in our regular VIP Assemblies.

Impact

Through our MFL curriculum our children will become engaged, curious, confident linguists able to express their ideas and thoughts in another language

, and to understand and respond to its speakers.  The pupils Outcomes for each child are recorded at the end of a unit of work and regularly throughout

the year and analysed for next steps.
