Art and design

At Kilham Church CE (VC) Primary school we agree with  Pablo Picasso's words that, "All children are artists." Art fosters the creativity and innovation needed to prepare children for an ever-evolving world. Art, craft and design should engage and inspire pupils and challenge them to invent and create their own work. As pupils progress they should become critical of their work and that of other significant artists. The subject should provide an opportunity for pupils to understand the contribution art makes to our world and the significance it has in our history.

Through the teaching of art, craft and design at Kilham Primary School, pupils aim to:

 -Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

 -Become proficient at drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

 -Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

 -Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Intent

At Kilham CE (VC) Primary School we believe that our children are entitled to a broad and balanced curriculum full of creative opportunities. Our art curriculum is closely matched to our vision where there are ‘Opportunities for all to achieve their full potential through creativity and challenge.’ Our art curriculum is accessible to all and gives children opportunities to learn new skills and develop these further through a range of media and materials. In line with the national curriculum 2014, the curriculum at Kilham C of E (VC) Primary School aims to ensure that all pupils:
• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. To equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to imitate, innovate and invent their own art.
• Become proficient at drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms. To deepen their own understanding of different techniques used to depict and represent ideas. To reflect on and evaluate artworks and use these to inspire their own art. 

Implementation

At Kilham School we use Cornerstones. Art lessons are planned as part of a themed approach and stand-alone, sessions giving children the opportunity to develop connections and improve their skills. A progression of skills has been mapped for each year group and is used to ensure that children have opportunities to improve their work and progress further. Sketch books are used to evidence their work and follows the child through the school. Work is regularly displayed in school. Whole school art theme weeks take place regularly. Art work is commended in our regular Celebration Assemblies.

Impact

Through our art curriculum our children will become engaged, creative, confident artists able to experiment and evaluate. Outcomes for each child are recorded at the end of a unit of work and regularly throughout the year and analysed for next steps.
