Steetlife Museum Visit Dec 2024
Last week, Class 2 embarked on a magical journey through time! Our destination? The fascinating Streetlife Museum in Hull.
As soon as we stepped into the museum, it was like stepping back in time. We sat in carriages and trams just like people did many years ago, and even got to ride in a Royal Mail Hull/ York carriage, imagining ourselves delivering letters to distant lands. We were amazed by the old cars, some steam-powered, and the strange-looking bicycles with big wheels and funny handlebars. There was an excellent range of bicycles to view, including an 1818 Hobby Horse, which the children really enjoyed looking at. We looked at sleighs from the 18th century and replica horse-drawn carriages that people used to travel in, considering how people would travel in bad weather back then.
One highlight of the trip was the interactive displays. We played vintage games, just like children did in the 1920s, and explored a recreated 1930s high street, complete with a cycle shop, a sweet shop, and a chemist. It was like stepping into a real-life time machine!
But the most exciting part of our trip was meeting the legendary Amy Johnson and see a replica of her famous bi-plane! She told us all about her incredible journey from London to Australia, and we got to wave her off with British pride as she said goodbye. We were so impressed by her courage and determination, and she was really surprised by how much we knew about her. The children remembered so many facts from school, they did us proud!
We also got to see some of Amy Johnson's personal belongings, like her childhood games, books, photographs, swim and gymnastics clothing, equipment she used to train as a pilot, and some family possessions which were handed down. It was like touching a piece of history!
Our trip to the Streetlife Museum was an unforgettable adventure. We learned so much about the past and how far we've come. We can't wait to share our experiences with our friends and family. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be making history ourselves!
